everyone knows americans don't agree on pronunciations.. that's great, because regional accents and dialects are a major part of why american english is so interesting.. josh katz, a former ph.d. student of statistics at north carolina state university, published a group of awesome visualizations of professor bert vaux and scott golder's linguistic survey, which looked at differences in american dialects (via detsl on /r/linguistics).. his results were first published on the abstract, the nc state university research blog.
the complete set of katz's maps, updated with the results from more than 350,000 new survey responses, are compiled in the new book "speaking american," publishing october 25 from houghton mifflin harcourt.. katz gave business insider permission to publish some of the coolest maps from his collection..

very interesting lecture and q&a session by professor eric smith of the santa fe institute.
in his discussion of the primacy of energy there is a lot of overlap with the ideas of nick lane of university college london.
if you still think abiogenesis had something to do with "primordial soup" you should invest half an hour to watch this.. ....
This looks good! Will watch with my wife this weekend.
when you finally and officially exited the cult, whether it be by disfellowshipping, disassociating or fading - what was the first things you did that are considered "worldly"?.
for me, it was like crash landing on another planet that looked like earth but was completely different to the earth i knew.
i wanted to learn everything that i thought i already knew.. first things i did:.
Went to university!
we like to think we are logical and have good reasons for for our beliefs.
no more so than when it comes to our reasons for rejecting the truth claims of jws.
we reject their version of history, such as the date of the fall of jerusalem, because it doesn't agree with the historical evidence.
I'm not a big fan of the terms "convince" or "persuade."
so my wife and i have been in the process of fading for a few months now as per my original post here.
about a week ago, i was browsing some ex-jw facebook groups when i saw a post that linked to the crisis of conscience book.
i said "f@(k it" and hit share on it.. a few hours later, i get a long text letter from my mom (who was a fb friend of mine) telling me the typical "good luck finding friends in the world" and how we have "nothing in common anymore"; basically, it was a 'farewell' text.
Wow. . . they'll follow the Flock book to the letter regarding pedos (no call to police, 2 witnesses to the crime necessary) but all the rules go out the window for a goddamned FB post.
Nah. . . . It's not a cult, right?
“Here's an easy way to figure out if you're in a cult: If you're wondering whether you're in a cult, the answer is yes.” -Stephen Colbert, I Am America
a girl i've known my entire life who supported me from a distance after i was disfellowshipped sent me this message on instagram today: .
let me know when your back... i'm unfollowing you on ig & snap.
i love you.
Take her advice. Be decisive. Tell you'll be there for her when she manages to free herself from a controlling religion. - Landy
I don't like this -- LOVE it!!!
all us creationists try to do is offer true evidence that the one and only god is out there watching and looking down on us.
we present that certain scientists know the truth about god and that he is everything that we see from trees, life, weather, the air we breath, and even the most simple molecules.
but of course you atheists reject it because it is your nature to not be humble and see god because you want to rule your own life.
Potato.
wow, this is awesome.
this really shows the jw passiveness towards child sex abusers.
there needs to be more of this exposing this!.
Yeah, I just saw that. I'm not at all shocked.

So, I have no idea whether this guy was a convicted child molester or not. . . .
. . . but what I find fascinating is the guy in the black shirt next to him covers his ears. . . .
Nah. . . . . it's not a cult. . . ..
Thanks for the post FREEMINDFADE

entertainment value:(previously nil) now enhanced by leavening the boring talks with interspersed video.
It wouldnt have anything to do with Harrison Ford , Han Solo , moving their would it ?
I thought you were kidding when you said this -- and I live in NJ!
Just googled it and it seems to be 100% true (although I doubt Ford is moving within Trenton city limits .. . . very nice farmland and houses not far from there though).
Further googling revealed his moving to Trenton was a phony news story. . . . but there are other rumors about Ford having a house in NJ, which really isn't that far-fetched.
